Au Diable Vert Station de Montagne in Sutton, Quebec, has been officially certified as Canada’s first DarkSky Approved Lodging by DarkSky International. This recognition reflects Au Diable Vert’s dedication to protecting the night sky through sustainable lighting practices and education while offering guests a one-of-a-kind stargazing experience in pristine wilderness.
Perched on the edge of the only open plateau on the south side of Mont Sutton at over 1,000 feet of altitude, Au Diable Vert’s unique location gives visitors one of the most spectacular views of the night sky in southern Quebec. Designated a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2018, with a nighttime sky quality of 21.63 mag/arcsec², this certification by DarkSky International further demonstrates the exceptional quality of this site.
Guests can stay overnight in one of 32 different types of accommodation, from cozy two-person pod cabins to cabins and treehouses for up to eight people, or fully equipped mountain-view suites. There are also rustic campsites for tents. The entire site is accessible only on foot, helping preserve the tranquility and beauty of the night sky.
A selection of four-season activities offers something for everyone, from the site’s 22 km network of Hok-ski, snowshoe, and hiking trails, to its river rental center with paddleboards, kayaks, and river tubes, to Canada’s only treetop canopy cycle ride, VéloVolant.
One of the most popular activities at Au Diable Vert, and central to its dark sky mission, is ObservÉtoiles – Night Sky Odyssey, the world’s first augmented-reality outdoor planetarium. Hosted in a specially designed 184-seat mountainside amphitheater, expert astronomers bring the skies alive using lasers and cutting-edge augmented-reality headsets. Shows are conducted in French, with selected dates offered in English.
Au Diable Vert is open 365 days a year. Activities and trails are open to both day visitors and overnight guests, but nighttime access is reserved for those staying in accommodations or participating in the planetarium show. Reservations are required and can be made at www.audiablevert.com.
